Remote Work Myths & How to Dispel Them

A lot of misconceptions and preconceived notions surround remote work. You’ll find a lot of skeptics saying that remote work sounds good in theory but you can’t make it work in reality. Or that people working remotely aren’t privy to all the information and cannot attend meetings. And my personal favourite, how can you be sure that your employees aren’t slacking during work hours?

In a post COVID world, many of these myths have already been dispelled as teams are working remotely like a well-oiled machine, attending meetings over Zoom and getting work done despite not having stepped inside an office since the past 4-5 months.

Well, in this blog, we will shed light upon some of the myths surrounding remote work and dispel them.

Remote Work Myths

Myth #1: Remote workers are lazy

There is this widespread perception that if you don’t see an employee glued to their desk and working, that they’re not doing anything at all. Any worker whether working in an office or remotely can slack off. This occurs if managers do not properly communicate deadlines and expectations of employees.

Tip: A manager can stay up to date by being in touch via a chat tool or connect through a video call to receive a direct report or discuss any challenges faced by the remote employees.


Myth #2: The remote worker has to constantly prove that they’re working

A drawback of working remotely is that you may need to regularly make your “presence” known. Be it a call from your manager/colleague, or a discussion in chat, or attending a virtual meet; employees can face added anxiety and pressure leading to unnecessary stress. Rather than focusing on completing their work, remote workers may have to worry about how their contributions are perceived by the top management.

Tip: Leave a status update when going offline and give a call back when you see you’ve missed a call or virtual meeting invite.


Myth #3: Remote Work ≠ Bad Company Culture

There’s this misconception that you cannot build a good team camaraderie due to remote workers not being present in the office. No lunchtime chit chats, stopping at a colleague’s desk to get an update, office gossip in the pantry, however, these social interactions can be created with remote workers.

Tip: You can set up fun virtual meets where you play games such as Tambola or dumb charades, or share interesting stories with each other to better get to know each other.


Myth #4: Remote workers are available 24x7

People assume that if someone is working from home, then they’re available for a work-related inquiry at all times whether on chat or a call. This is not true. In fact, one of the best remote work practices is to establish strict work hours the same as one would in office. Moreover, a company should encourage its remote workers to take proper lunch breaks, communicate and decide their available work hours and also exit their workspace physically once they’re done with their daily work tasks.

Tip: Create a team or company-wide Google/chat group where every remote worker communicates their availability to the admin, then this information is circulated in the proper channels within the company.



Effective remote work starts at the top when the company leaders create a culture wherein remote workers feel like valued members of the team. This is done by rooting out non-remote friendly behaviors and instilling inclusive processes in their place.
